Complementary and Alternative Medicine

We offer holistic care plans for thyroid health optimisation. Have you recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis? Perhaps you have been suffering with hypothyroidism or symptoms for a long time. You might even have had multiple blood tests always come back in the normal range. We are here to empower you with the information you need to optimise your wellness.

Autoimmune thyroid disease can be caused by a combination of both genetic and environmental influences. The genetics represent approximately 70 – 80% and the environment contributes approximately 20 – 30% to the cause. Emerging science says our genes are not set in stone! We can influence our genes with our food choices, lifestyle choices and by optimising certain environmental factors.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis leading to hypothyroidism (under active) makes up the majority of autoimmune thyroid disease. Autoimmune thyroid disease is one of the most common types of autoimmunity. Quite often patients can experience changes in the levels of hormone as the gland becomes more and more inflamed. You may experience periods of hyper function (over active) and periods of hypo function (hypothyroid). It’s possible to have overlap in your symptoms with occasional hyperthyroidism, periods of seemingly normal function and periods of hypothyroidism.

It’s important to remember that the immune system is the issue – the thyroid is the symptom not the cause…

Thyroid symptoms

Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism:

  • Fatigue
  • Low blood pressure
  • Cold extremities (also associated with iron deficiency)
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain
  • Dry skin and hair loss
  • Depression
  • Irregular periods
  • Infertility

Signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism:

  • Anxiety
  • Weight loss
  • Tremor
  • Fatigue
  • Protruding eyes
  • Sweating
  • Heart palpitations
  • Insomnia
  • High blood pressure
  • Diarrhoea

A diagnosis of autoimmune thyroid disease requires testing of thyroid antibodies. Testing  TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) alone does not give a complete picture. It’s critical to identify if your symptoms are due to gland dysfunction or autoimmunity. This can be done with your GP. Do you know why your thyroid is underactive?

Thyroid antibodies include:

  • Thyroid peroxidase (TPOab)
  • Thyroglobulin (TGab)
  • Thyroid receptor (TRab)

You can be empowered with natural thyroid treatment

Consider that genes are not your destiny. The gene can be thought of as the loaded gun but ultimately it is the environment that pulls the trigger. Environmental contributors to autoimmune thyroid disease include stress, iodine intake, alcoholism, infections, smoking, polychlorinated biphenyls, nutrient deficiency and mercury.

In clinic our first step once you have been diagnosed with your GP is to screen you for nutrient deficiencies that disturb thyroid function. This includes an analysis of your diet and ability to absorb the nutrients. Specific diet and lifestyle recommendations that are individually tailored to you in order to optimise thyroid function and remove contributors to immune dysfunction will also feature in your personalised wellness plan.

We will complete a thorough in depth holistic health assessment to reveal underlying infections such as bacteria, parasites, fungus and viruses, heavy metal toxicities, gut function, liver function and nutrient status.

As part of your holistic treatment plan we will address gut and liver function as this is where majority of your T4 (thyroxine) is converted into the active T3 (triiodothyronine).

Once we have gathered all the information we will put together a detailed holistic wellness plan. Your plan will include recommendations for diet and lifestyle changes including the latest science for natural medicines. We do not promise a cure to your illness but rather work alongside your medical team to optimise thyroid function (conversion of thyroxine to active hormone) and address environmental triggers. Our holistic plan aims to balance underlying causes and in turn improve your symptoms and quality of life.

During your naturopathy consultations we will provide you with the following:

  • A holistic thyroid analysis to identify potential contributors to imbalance
  • Appropriate referral letters to your medical doctor and endocrinologist to collaborate
  • Monitoring of symptoms and progress
  • General gentle detoxification and cleansing to optimise healing
  • A dietary analysis and recommendations
  • A detailed holistic thyroid wellness plan listing our treatment objectives and holistic natural thyroid prescription
  • Resources – scientific studies on natural therapeutics for thyroid health and autoimmunity to empower and educate you on your health journey
  • Recipe links and useful handouts
  • Basic counseling, health coaching and support to set and meet your health and well being goals
