“Naturopathic treatment shines in chronic disease states because the underlying cause is addressed and while symptom relief is important Naturopaths avoid suppressing symptoms as their primary goal for treatment, incorporating the diet, lifestyle and environmental changes that are key to wellness. By enhancing the vital force and improving the tone and function of relevant body systems we stimulate the body’s innate ability to heal itself” – Jean

What is Naturopathy?
Naturopathy is a traditional healing modality that uses a holistic approach to wellness and aims to resolve underlying causes of imbalance or disharmony. Via strengthening the tone and integrity of body tissues and body systems Naturopaths strive to stimulate the vital force (aka chi, prana, life force) to encourage the body to heal itself.
Naturopathic philosophy includes a strong emphasis on the role of “doctor as teacher” and the therapeutic relationship centers around patient empowerment and collaboration. Modern Naturopathic practice combines current scientific evidence with traditional remedies and incorporates a number of treatment strategies including:
- Diet and lifestyle advice
- Basic counseling
- Nutritional Analysis and Clinical Nutritional Medicines
- Herbal Medicines
- Flower Essences
Naturopathic care adheres to a philosophy known as the therapeutic order where by minimal therapeutic intervention is taken as an initial approach, and removal of any predisposing, perpetuating or contributing factors including diet, lifestyle, environmental and chemical influences that may have led to the imbalance or “dis-ease” in the first place are addressed. In this way Naturopaths avoid suppression of symptoms to ensure a holistic systems based approach. Naturopathy treats the person as a whole. As everyone is unique 2 people with the same disease state may receive 2 different treatments depending on their individual presentation and circumstances.
Because deep change is often needed in chronic disease there is no magic bullet or overnight cure. The Naturopath will guide you at a pace that is suitable to you and your circumstances to make the lasting changes that your body, mind and spirit require to heal.
Jean uses the following laboratories: Laverty Pathology, Nutripath, Genova, Ubiome and Healthscope.
Why do Functional testing?
Functional testing refers to laboratory tests that seek to identify the underlying cause of imbalance and assess the function of various body systems and tissues.
Naturopaths may order functional tests depending on your signs and symptoms to direct and tailor your treatment to stream line and target your presenting complaint and to optimise your wellness.
Pathology testing utilises reference ranges to identify overt disease processes whereas functional testing seeks to identify the level of function and optimise your health. People often experience symptoms well before conventional test results appear outside of the range in the full blown disease state and functional tests when combined with a thorough case history can help tailor your treatment.
Examples of functional tests include:
- Complete digestive stool analysis
- Salivary hormone profile
- Female hormone profile
- Thyroid hormone profile
- Functional liver detoxification profile
- Adrenal cortisol profile
Referral for functional testing requires a consultation and case history health assessment. Your practitioner will assess your diet and lifestyle, body signs and symptoms and any other relevant factors to determine which tests best suit your needs. Requests for tests will be requested with consideration to your budget and are not rebated via medicare. Your Naturopath will write a referral letter to collaborate with your general medical practitioner and the out of pocket expense will be minimised where possible.
