Do I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?
What is it?
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a complex combination of symptoms including at least 4 of the below:
- Poor memory or concentration
- Unrefreshing sleep
- Post exercise malaise
- Sore throat
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is more common in women and has been associated with long term stress affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis leading to aberrant cortisol response. The depleted cortisol underpins poor adaptation and is an associated cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Trauma during childhood has also been implicated in the aetiology of the syndrome. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and can also be categorised as Post-infectious fatigue syndrome (PIFS) or post viral fatigue syndrome.
Research shows that nervous system function during sleep favours the sympathetic fight or flight response over the healthy parasympathetic activity during sleep in CFS which contributes to the unrefreshing sleep.
Cognitive behavioural therapy is an indicated treatment demonstrated to have a positive effect in CFS patients and your naturopath will do a holistic health assessment to identify any nutritional, environmental, lifestyle and functional contributors. You practitioner may also request some tests including adrenal, thyroid, blood glucose and sex hormones, nutrients such as iron and b vitamins, immune cells, viruses such as Epstein barr virus, cytomegalo virus and parasites etc.
